This summer residence is nestled in an old pine forest just inland of Lake Michigan. Inspired by an open floor plan and connection to nature, the main living space acts as an axis through the site, with a cantilevering roof and overhead glass doors opening at each end. Treehouse-like sleeping quarters flank the sides with framed views of the woods and overhanging balconies. Local cedar panels and gray cement board compose the rainscreen siding, over a permeable membrane layer. A cedar bathouse opens to the exterior with indoor/outdoor showers. We have been continuing the design of the interior, with a plan for a spiral stair of folded steel at the glass-enclosed corner and custom chandeliers above the dining room, inspired by abstracted tetrahedrons.
